The Value of Living Insurance…..

Yesterday reminded me exactly why, at 72, I’m still in this business advising clients on how to correctly purchase and fund affordable long term insurance and self-manage your retirement savings.

On my way to work I received a call from a 49‑year‑old client. He’s the father of twin boys under three, with a stay‑at‑home spouse, working and renting in Auckland. At 11 a.m. that same morning he was scheduled for radical cancer surgery to remove his bladder and prostate.

He was crying as I answered the call. As someone who has also had bladder cancer, I assumed he was ringing for some final encouragement and support. I often lend my ear and wisdom to clients going through cancer.  But this time, he wasn’t calling for support.

His tears were tears of relief…. he was calling to say thank you.

Earlier that morning, while preparing for surgery, he was trying to sort his family’s short‑term finance needs — moving money around to cover the next two weeks’ bills, rent, and household expenses.

When he logged in to his online banking app. He saw a six‑figure sum in his account.

His trauma - Bladder Cancer claim had been approved and paid by Asteron Life far more quickly than he expected.

In that moment, heading into life‑changing surgery, he knew his family was financially secure for the foreseeable future. Instead of worrying about money, he could now focus on one thing: surviving and recovering.  This is exactly what good insurance advice is for.

And this brings me to the purpose of this email.

A simple question for you

If you were told today that you had cancer surgery in two hours:

  • Would your mortgage or rent still be paid?

  • Would your partner and children be financially secure?

  • Could you afford time off work to recover properly?

If you’re not sure of the answers, now is the time to review your cover — not when you’re lying in a hospital bed.

What to do next

I strongly encourage you to take one of these steps:

  1. Reply to this email and say, “Let’s review my cover.”

  2. Or call us to book a no‑obligation, no cost review.

Sharon 021 109 3165

We will:

  • Check whether your current cover is still fit for purpose to protect your income debt level and family needs.

  • Identify any gaps that could put you or your family at risk.

  • Make sure that if life takes an unexpected turn, money is not the main thing you’re worrying about.

You don’t need to wait until there’s a diagnosis or a crisis. The best time to sort this out is while you’re healthy and have choices.

I’ve seen both sides — as an adviser and as a cancer patient myself. The difference proper cover makes in a crisis is immense.

If you were scheduled for surgery in two hours, I’d want you to have the same peace of mind my client had yesterday.

I look forward to catching up soon

Warm regards
Kevin Seque
